Complicated PCB picture to showcase Fritzing

Sorry to hear they are making the switch. Maybe you should consider making a fork of it that you maintain on your own. When I first started with PCBs I used Eagle and when I decided to get back into it I found Eagle had been purchased by Autodesk and ruined so I decided I would go with Ki-cad only to find how terrible it was. I tried following a few basic tutorials like a battery and led and switch only to find basic things like SPST switches were not available by default. Then once you found the parts the problem was having to do your project twice (once in schematic and once in PCB) making it very slow. Then I finally decided to try Fritzing despite what I thought of it (breadboard made it look like it was for kids and not a serious EDA). But once I tried Fritzing I was hooked. I was able to work in multiple views allowing me to move components from one board to another in PCB which would move the components from one schematic to another. If it had been Ki-cad I would have to go back and make a new schematic and a new PCB after hoping I knew exactly where every component would sit on my multi-board device.

Well. I am not running through an active VPN connection and all other software - network enabled - works fine both through and without out an active VPN connection and since the error happens in Fritzing.exe who gives the error message Fritzing must be doing something with OpenVPN or? Does it link to it? Does not matter if OpenVPN is running or not (or connected or not).

The libgit2 library that Fritzing uses to check github for parts updates is likely using open ssl. My guess (given it is patch tuesday at least here) is the latest patches for the latest bug have affected open ssl. I haven’t rebooted to update yet so I don’t yet know if it will bite Win7 if this is true.

Edit: just rebooted Win7 to apply the updates and my machine didn’t brick and Fritzing still works, so maybe it isn’t the new patches (or maybe only on Win10
which I’m not running).

Yeah I know. KC seams like a bunch of separate programs that don’t talk to each other in one wrapper.

I started 2 years ago and learnt FZ because they were using it, but like a month latter they were talking about switching to KC or Eagle so I spent days watching tutorials and trying both. Eagle was out because of it’s 8cm2 limit, and KC seamed so primitive to me. I then spent 6 months of trail and error, because I didn’t know what I was doing and there was no help back then - I hope I didn’t kill this project telling people how to make parts because the FZ crew derived their income from making them -, and made a crude part that swayed them to stay with FZ.

Now I’m back to learning KC, and apart from the trace shove like Altium I don’t see how people are using it with disconnected views. I don’t know all the tricks yet because this is my 1st day, but I deleted a SCH line and in nothing happened in PCB. There must be some trick to it because I don’t want to do everything twice.

After solving problems in this forum about views not matching each other - they were doing it wrong - I now know what to look for and did my 1st .fzz last week using any and every view to make changes, and it was brilliant. You just have to remember each part has a numbered end and not just connect it willy nilly in other views. Also because I kinda know what happens in other views in my head with changes I know what has to be done in each view to keep it correct - if you aren’t sure you just check each view, and by trial and error you see patterns with changes -.

Just grab a generic IC from CORE bin, change it to 40pin in Inspector, and then change the pin spacing to match. You can right-click EDIT and change pin names in Connectors and info in META and save as a custom part, if you want to go to all that trouble.

Okay, thanks a lot! I’ll try that.

Which directory to save .fzpz and use as my own part?

Thank You Peter. I learned a lot about how the Fritzing program works. Did not know how to change the values for a given component in inspector. I have a hard time comprehending written instructions. Very grateful how you stepped through the process! Was over complicating this wonderful program. Being color blind is a rather difficult handicap when it comes to any wiring I have had to do. Found an app for my phone the other day that has aided in my circuitry endeavors, was written for the blind.

My gratitude to you Sir
RJ

It does not really matter where it is saved. Once you have fritzing running you go to the parts selection area (bins) and in the top right corner there is a little drop down menu with an import function. Once it is imported it will be in your “my parts” bin.

The important things to remember in Fritzing are that the three views are linked, so changes in one will automatically appear in the others and the direction of components matters (because every pin has an internal identifier) so orientation between views matters that is why the bb_align.fzz, a common problem is to get the resistors or leds in breadboard opposite to those in schematic. When that happens the components get shorted together and routing becomes a mess. As well the top 2 and bottom 2 rows of the breadboard connect horizontally and the 5 pins on either side of the center line connect together vertically (as I recall some of your components in the original were shorted by being connected to the same set of 5 pins). The top and bottom horizontal strips don’t connect to each other by default, so your original would have needed a wire from the ground on the top to the ground on the bottom to work. If you run in to problems feel free to post, there are lots of useful tricks various of us know (and a number of bugs too unfortunatly.)

While it is true Fritzing uses the mine (and for sketches, the temp bin) for parts by default (and the location for that by operating system is available in the parts format document on github.) I find it a good practice to use the export function (right click on the part in the bin and click export part) to save a copy of the part in a directory not controlled by Fritzing. You can use any directory name you like (I use fritzing_backup). It is possible to corrupt the parts database and need to clear it which will clear the parts in the mine parts bin.

Also a legacy ratsnest(dotted) line might be left behind when you change a part in a view due to the other views thing it should still be connected, so check if it still needs to be there in all views and delete if necessary.

A connection highlights a pin, so they should look different, and you can click on a pin and every connected pin will highlight to show you what else is connected to that.

Hello,
Do you think you could share the fzpz file please? It doesn’t work with the fzp only.
Thank you in advance

Set Size of PCB

Hi Guys

I have a quick question, how can I set the PCB Size I would like to use, or if this is not possible how can I see after the autorouting how big the size is of the PCB?

Thanks
Martin

When in PCB view select the board and then in the inspector change the dimensions of the board. Also note that Autorouter does not work well unless your board is very basic and you have all the parts placed exactly where they should be for the best routing already. And even then the routes it creates will be ugly and not very efficient. I would NOT recommend anyone use the autorouter (in any EDA software).

You should also be able to set the shape of the board. Round, triangle, etc. I believe.
